Setting up a home theater in a small room does not require a dedicated space or an expensive renovation. A bedroom or a corner of a living room of 12 to 20 square metres can become a genuinely comfortable place to watch films, as long as you choose the right pieces and put them in the right places. This guide goes step by step: measuring, choosing the picture, sound, lighting and seating, and splitting your budget so you can build it over time.
Step 1: measure the room and decide where you will sit
Take a tape measure and record three things: the width of the wall you will project onto or put the TV against, the distance from that wall to your seats, and the distance to where a projector would sit. Seats should face the screen squarely rather than off to one side. In a small room, an 80 to 100 inch picture usually feels right; sitting too close to a huge image means constantly moving your eyes. Keep these numbers to compare with each projector’s throw distance table. Check where the power sockets are as well: the projector, speakers and TV box all need power, so a surge-protected extension lead near the equipment keeps cables tidy and safer. Give the projector room to breathe; tucked into a closed shelf it runs hotter and its fan gets louder, which is exactly what you do not want during a quiet scene.
Step 2: the picture for a small home theater
If you can darken the room, a projector gives the biggest picture for sensible money. Short-throw projectors sit close to the wall and still produce a large image, which is ideal for small rooms. A smooth wall in matte white is enough to start; for a flatter, more even image, add a wall-mounted screen and a ceiling mount so the projector does not take up table space. If the room cannot be made dark, a TV remains the more comfortable option. Read how to choose a mini projector to understand the specs.

Step 3: enough sound, without echo
A small room does not need a lot of power. A compact soundbar or a pair of good Bluetooth speakers either side of the screen is already a big improvement on built-in sound. Rooms with many hard surfaces, such as bare walls, tiled floors and glass, tend to echo; a rug, heavy curtains and a few cushions on the sofa make the sound tighter and dialogue clearer. Step 4: lighting and atmosphere
Lighting is what turns an ordinary room into a “cinema”.
- Blackout curtains make projected colours richer and allow afternoon viewing.
- An LED strip behind the TV or under the bed gives a soft glow and reduces eye strain.
- Lights with timers and remote dimming mean you never have to get up mid-film.
- Warm light is easier on the eyes than cold white during long sessions.
Step 5: seating and snacks
Small rooms rarely have space for extra chairs, so make the most of the bed or sofa with lumbar cushions and a light throw. Bean bags and floor cushions let several people sit close together. A snack tray, a small popcorn maker and drinks with lids make it feel like a proper film night without spills on the bedding.
Splitting the budget: build in order
| Order | Item | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Projector or TV box | A big picture straight away |
| 2 | Soundbar or Bluetooth speaker | Sound changes the experience most |
| 3 | Curtains, screen, mount | A better, tidier picture |
| 4 | Ambient lights, cushions, popcorn maker | Completes the mood |
